ZECHE ZOLLVEREIN Some History The industrial area of Zollverein was erected starting in 1847 by Franz Haniel. The area become the most important coal mining industry in Germany and was also important for the steel production. In the years from 1920 – 1930 many buildings in the new industrial architecture style are erected (Fritz Schupp and Martin Kremmer). The purpose was the integration of all mining and coking activities to a complex steering process. Today these buildings are architectural landmarks and worth a visit.
